![]() Some characters have essentially had the same moves for 2 decades and the DLC has proven the devs can get a lot more creative given modern technology. I've discussed this topic a few times and I think it won't deviate too far from the Smash formula, but it will revamp every moveset. I'm just not sure I see myself (and the fans at large) being excited for D-string Nintendo character additions and third-parties who are pretty far down the third-party priority list when it means we have to lose half of the roster we have now. This is partially why I feel like the next Smash should build off Ultimate and work towards fleshing out the modes and features, instead of being an all-new roster reboot. And I'm not sure how Sakurai (or whoever gets put in charge) will rationalize getting fans excited for the new additions when all anyone will be thinking about is whether their favorites are part of the half that got culled. To sum up, my point is this: I think everyone who has been talking about a Smash "reboot" that works from the ground-up to make veterans feel fresh and add new characters, at the expense of most of the current roster, isn't thinking about what that really means. Wait, exciting new third-party alert! Newcomer: Doomguy! We had to drop Wolf, Banjo & Kazooie, Lucina, and Ice Climbers to make room, but everyone's excited, right? One more time now, let's say sayonara to Greninja, Palutena, Sheik, and Ken, and let's welcome Impa. Rool, and Dark Samus, but don't fret, we know how long you've been waiting to see Bandana Waddle Dee. Now let's drop Incineroar, Corrin, Terry, and Dark Pit here's Dixie Kong.Īnd we're also losing Wii Fit Trainer, Snake, K. We've cut Piranha Plant, Byleth, Cloud, and Richter here's Isaac. And you might say "well, there's a lot of fat in the roster, we can trim some of that to make room for new characters," but who are the new characters you add to make that fat trimming worth it? Obviously there's not any actual exchanges being made, but you could still look at the roster for the complete Ultimate and Smash 6 and compare the two. That means for every new character, right around four characters from Ultimate will need to be gone. I'm sure you're probably seeing what I'm getting at now, but just to make it extremely clear to get down to a "reasonable" roster of 40 veterans and 15 newcomers, we need 48 cuts. The original had twelve, Melee added thirteen, Brawl added eighteen, and Smash 4 (pre-DLC) had eighteen newcomers again. And now let's say there's about fifteen newcomers, since that seems to be a good sweetspot for standard, non-Everyone-is-Here Smash games. That's still a pretty huge roster, mind you, but I feel like it still makes my point. I've seen a lot of consensus that there's no way (barring an enhanced port) that the next Smash maintains Ultimate's massive roster, and I somewhat agree, that if they're making a new game from the ground up, keeping everyone will be near impossible.īut I'm coming today to talk about an elephant in the room with massive cuts happening: not just who do you cut, but who replaces them and how do you have them feel worth it? Smash Ultimate will have 88 characters at the end of its life, so let's say they reduce the roster to 55, close to Smash 4's 58 and have that be pre-DLC. ![]() Galint Gaming - Organizers of Battle of BC 5Ĭody - Top modern Brawl player, champion of Apex 2022Īaron - Top Ultimate Diddy Kong for Moist EsportsĪpolloKage - Current best Snake main in UltimateĬosmos - Top Aegis main, champion of Shine 2022įor a full list, click here!
